What Makes a Braille Sign ADA Compliant?

Ensuring compliance with ADA standards helps make spaces more accessible to individuals with visual impairments, improving inclusivity and safety.  Here are the guidelines of making an ADA compliant sign according to our understanding.

 

Contrast:

  • The sign background and characters should have a non-glare finish.
  • Characters and their background should have a non-glossy finish and a light-dark contrast ratio of at least 70%.

Tactile Text Size and Typeface:

  • Raised characters should be displayed in a sans serif font and all upper case.
  • Minimum letter height for tactile characters is 5/8 inches (16 mm).
  • Maximum letter height for tactile characters is 2 inches (50 mm).

Pictograms:

  • Pictograms should have a clear, easy-to-interpret representation of the intended message.
  • Pictograms should be raised and accompanied by text and Braille.

Braille Translation:

  • Braille should be contracted Grade 2 Braille.
  • Braille should accurately convey information presented in the visual text.

 

Braille Placement and Size:

  • Braille should be positioned below the corresponding text and be centered horizontally.
  • Dot height should be between 0.025 inches and 0.037 inches (0.6 mm and 0.9 mm).
  • The distance between the nearest point of dots should be 0.09 inches (2.3 mm) minimum and 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) maximum.

Mounting:

  • Signs should be mounted on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door.
  • The centerline of the sign should be located between 48 inches (1219 mm) and 60 inches (1524 mm) above the finished floor.
  • There should be clear floor space of 30 inches by 48 inches (762 mm by 1220 mm) in front of the sign.

Finish and Durability:

  • Signs should be durable and easy to clean.
  • Sign edges should be smooth, with no sharp edges.
  • The material should be resistant to vandalism and tampering.
